I am building a social networking website and I want to make it better than Facebook (to a certain extent of course, such as the key parts of the social networking site, profile, photos, status, comments, etc.). I have a great idea for a new kind of social networking website but I don’t know what to do to get it started. What do I need to do?

I was wondering if there are any good books on owning and managing a social networking website. I have found it difficult to prepare for the challenges of managing a website. We recently hired a consulting/software development company that has taken care of everything from design and development to analyzing, testing, and hosting. However, I would like to know everything that they know!

Is there anything I can study to learn the ins and outs of owning and operating a social networking website?
